The New York Times’ Michael Pollan presents an article on the difficulties that will arise as a result of not having a truly sustainable agricultural system and what needs to be done. Pollan talks about the dangers of antibiotic use on farm animals and the effect they have in antibiotic resistant bacteria. It is estimated that 70% of antibiotics used in America each year are used on farm animals to prevent them from dying from infections in the filthy environment in which they are kept. The rapidly declining bee population, an essential but often overlooked part of the agricultural process, puts the pollination of crops in danger. It is an eye opening article that alerts us about problems that are not very far away.

Michael Pollan, del New York Times presenta un artículo sobre las dificultades que estamos enfrentando al no tener una cultura agrícola verdaderamente sustentable y sobre lo que se debe de hacer al respecto. Pollan habla acerca del uso de antibióticos en los animales de granja y el efecto que tienen en la evolución de bacterias infecciosas resistentes a los antibióticos. Se calcula que un 70% de los antibióticos utilizados cada año en los Estados Unidos son utilizados en los animales de granja para prevenir las numerosas infecciones que se dan por las condiciones de vida tan pobres en las que son críados. También habla acerca de la población de abejas que va constantemente declinando y afecta tremendamente al campo ya que se pierden su potencial de polinización, algo esencial para la agricultura. Es un artículo que nos abre los ojos a un mundo de dificultades que no estan nada lejos.
