Pablo Escobar, Colombia’s most infamous drug lord, kept a private zoo at his Hacienda Nápoles. With his death, the Colombian government removed most of the animals, except for the hippos, which have since run loose and bred, taking over neighboring ponds and the river. Today there is growing concern locally about the wild hippos in the river, since they are highly territorial creatures that could easily kill anyone who invaded their territory on the river. Reportedly, at least one hippo has ventured as far as Doradal, a town one kilometer away from the Hacienda, to the general panic of pedestrians. The hippo left on its own, much to the relief of the townspeople.

Después de su muerte el gobierno colombiano se encargó de acomodar los animales en otros zoológicos, exceptuando los hipopótamos, los cuales desde entonces han escapado de su jaula original y se han multiplicado, apropiándose de los estanques cercanos y del río. Hoy hay una creciente preocupación entre los pobladores ya que los hipopótamos son animales tremendamente territoriales y podrían fácilmente matar a cualquiera que invadiera su territorio en el río. Según reportes, por lo menos uno de los hipopótamos se ha aventurado hasta Doradal, un pueblo a un kilómetro de la Hacienda, causando pánico entre los pobladores. Para su alivio, el animal se retiró al poco tiempo.
