Got one of these on my cup of coffee this morning. Apparently a compound is added to the polystyrene when it’s manufactured that enhances it’s biodegradability.

Olaf Breuning ::::: Olaf Breuning

New York-based, Swiss-born artist Olaf Breuning has one of the quirkiest websites I have seen in a while. His work is excellent, too, he was recently included in the 2008 Whitney Biennial. I especially enjoy his Chinatown sculptures, made with a variety of objects found in one of New York’s most notorious neighborhoods.

Modern Living is a series of short web animations by dutch digital artist Han Hoogerbrugge. The films represent the individual battles of modern living that at the end become the reason of greatest struggle of personal development in our society. Further, the user gets to manipulate the animation while interpreting its content and its meaning.

Note: On the 49-45 section, the third animation top to bottom titled The Arcade Game, after five attempts I can say that the second victim is imposible to kill. Kids dont try this at home.

As british designer George Watson stated: “there has been little development of the toaster since the start of the century, whilst other appliances have developed and improved incorporating new technologies and thinking, toaster have remained relatively untouched. When the toaster was first invented eating toast was a social activity that took place on the breakfast table, these days toasters have been relegated to cheap plastic objects hidden away in the kitchen landscape. This toaster is designed to engage the user, re-invigorating the social context of toasting by questioning everything about what we toast with today.”

Como ha dicho el diseñador Inglés George Watson, “ha habido muy poco desarrollo en el tostador desde el comienzo del siglo, mientras otras aplicaciones se han desarrollado y mejorado incorporando nuevas tecnologías, no obstante, el tostador no ha cambiado. Cuando el tostador se inventó, el comer pan tostado era una actividad social que se llevaba acabo en el comedor, ahora, los tostadores se han convertido en objetos de plástico baratos, escondidos del paisaje de la cocina. Este nuevo tostador atrae al usuario y renueva el contexto social de tostar, al cuestionar todo sobre lo que tostamos hoy en día”.

I always took for granted that band-aids approximated my skin color. In fact, I never really considered the fact that they were supposed to approximate an average skin tone, so seeing this product opens my eyes to both a very real problem I had never considered, and an appropriate design solution.

The Aquaduct

The Aquaduct is a pedal powered vehicle that allows people in developing countries to easily transport a vast amount of water from the source to their homes. Besides aiding with transportation, the vehicle has a built on filtering system that purifies water while in motion and a storage system that keeps the water clean even when kept in outdoor environments.

El Aquaduct es un triciclo que permite a las personas en países en vías de desarrollo transportar una gran cantidad de agua desde la fuente hasta sus hogares. Además de facilitar el transporte, el triciclo incluye un sistema de filtración que purifica el agua con el movimiento de los pedales y permite mantener el agua limpia aunque esta se almacene en espacios exteriores.

The Lihit Number 5 is a staple-less stapler produced circa 1986 by the Japanese company Lihit Industrial. It is a very clever mechanism in which the stapler cuts out a flap of paper and a slot through which it slides the flap, all in a single punch by the user.
