A young man in Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico has started a line of t-shirts titled “Puro Sinaloa Compa” with phrases common to drug dealing, an activity associated with this area. Some of the t-shirts read: “Hide the gun, there’s a road block”, “Outta my way”, “Your choice: silver or lead” and “Careful with the monsters.” Clever phrases many times with hidden meanings.

The Museum of Drug traffic (closed to the public) in Mexico City shows drugs, artifacts that belonged to famous drug traffiquers, their technology and samples of their culture, for militaries aspiring to enter the war against drug traffic in Mexico. Some of the artifacts on display are Osiel Cárdenas‘ gun with a figurine of Jude the Apostole in gold, El Güero Palma’s AK-47 with a carved gold palm, and an engraved door from one of Chapo Guzmán’s houses.

In a June, 2006 article by Channel 5 in Weslaco, Texas, two members of the wildly violent Mexican crime organization Los Zetas (“The Z’s”), speaking anonymously relate what it is like to work for the organization. One bit in particular stood out to me, the brutal practice of putting people in a cage with a live tiger in order to get information. Once the interrogators have no more use for the victims, they are left in the cage for the tiger to eat alive:
“I talked about a short time ago, there is a tiger that they put live people in with to get information,” he said. “Once they get the information. All the information they get – after this throw them to the tiger to eat them up. They never find their body.”

En un artículo con fecha de Junio de 2006 por el Canal 5 de Welasco, Texas, dos miembros de la increíblemente violenta organización criminal mexicana Los Zetas, hablando bajo la condición de su anonimato, relatan como es trabajar para la organización. Una parte de la entrevista me pareció especialmente brutal, en la que describen como meten personas en una jaula con un tigre para sacarles información. Una vez que los interrogadores han obtenido toda la información necesaria, se deja a las víctimas en la jaula para que el tigre se las coma vivas:
“Hablé de hace un rato, hay un tigre con el que meten gente viva para obtener información” dijo. “Una vez que tienen la información. Toa la información que obtienen – después los avientan con el tigre para que se los coma. Nunca encuentran su cuerpo.”
Taxi drivers in the city of Mazatlan offer tours of houses where major drug dealers have died, where they’ve been arrested or where gun fights have been staged. The tour includes Fracisco Arellano’s nightclub, the deathplace of Ramon Arellano Felix and the place where popular mexican singer, Valentin Elizalde first sang live. In Matamoros the tour includes the place where Osiel Cardenas was arrested, and the CERESO 1 jail, where many gunfights have taken place in the past. (via Portal Grupero)
The phenomenon of the popularization of drug dealers is clearly revealed with this news. A phenomenon that probably started with the narco corrido, as a legitimizing tool, has evolved into a pop culture. For me this phenomenon extremely intriguing, the irony of what on one side is considered a crime, and on the other is celebrated is fascinating.

El fenómeno de la creciente popularidad del narcotraficante es claramente revelado con estas noticias. Este es un fenómeno que probablemente comenzó con el narco corrido, como herramienta proveedora de legitimidad. Para mi es un fenómeno muy intrigante, pues la ironía de algo que por un lado se considera un grave crimen, y por otro es celebrado, es fascinante.
Our namesakes in León, Guanajuato are at it again, fighting for their territory in an epic battle against Los Calaveras in the Chapalita neighborhood. And the neighbors are scared, really scared. The events in this article actually happened a few months before those in the previous article we mentioned here, we apologize for the lack of a chronological order in our reporting. This time, a Calavera was badly injured, the windshields of the few unlucky cars that happened to be parked in the area shattered, tires slashed and a few windows in neighboring houses broken by stray bricks. It was around midnight and the police never bothered to show up. Ironically, only a few hours earlier that day, the Minister of Public Safety had given a press conference during which he stated that a plan was already in the works to fight gang related crime.

Adtiya ‘Romeo’ Dev, 19, has become a celebrity in Phagwara, India, his hometown, for being only 2″19′ tall. His short height has not stopped him from training at the local gym, where his trainer Ranjeet Pal has developed a special routine for Romeo’s capabilities. At only 9 lbs. of weight, Romeo is able to lift 1.5lbs dumbbells. He dreams of entering show business and has already performed in local TV shows, dancing. Romeo says he earns “good money” but he isn’t into it to get rich, he wants to travel a lot.

A blogger by the name of Jane is chronicling her last 90 days of life (it’s down to 85 by now). She plans to commit suicide at the end of the 90 days and discusses on her blog issues like what she will be wearing on her last day (join her in her quest for the perfect dress for this day), what to do with her stuff once she is gone, etc. I cannot decide whether it is a well planned hoax or not, but she seems very serious about it:
“I really want to reiterate that this is a public but anonymous record and was not meant to be a big thing. I didn’t think anyone would find it or even care if they did. I guess I was wrong.“

Planea suicidarse al terminar este plazo y en su blog plantea cuestiones como que hacer con sus pertenencias cuando ya no esté aqui, y como estará vestida al momento de suicidarse (acompáñala en su búsqueda por el vestido perfecto). No se si sea verdad o no, pero parece que lo está tomando muy en serio:
“De verdad quiero reiterar que esta es una documentación pública pero anónima y no se suponía que fuera gran cosa. No pensé que nadie fuera a encontrar mi página, o que les importaría si la llegaran a encontrar. Me imagino que estaba equivocada.“

It’s old news (Halloween 2007) but worth mentioning. U.S. Department of Homeland Security employees held a costume party and contest judged by Julie Myers, Assistant Homeland Security Secretary. She awarded top honors to a white man who had used makeup to darken his complexion, wore a prison stripes suit and fake dreadlocks. Myers apologized one week later, stating that at the party she had not been able to tell that the unidentified employee was wearing makeup.

“ This house is located in an area near rugged coastline subject to strong prevailing winds and sits within an expanse of native tea tree. The pattern of tree growth is caused by light stimulus, or phototropism. In this project the analysis of dynamic forces – wind energy, wind turbulence and phototropism – have informed the modeling of the building envelope.
Within the living room the ceiling wraps down to an internal water tank. The tank cools the ambient air temperature of the living room during summer, supplies rain water, and structurally carries the roof load. Excess water drains to an external tank, and is used for flushing toilets, irrigating the garden, washing wetsuits and occasionally for drinking. During winter the tank is drained and wrapped in an insulating jacket. The tank also plays an important role in organizing the living area into four discrete zones: kitchen, living, eating and work.
Wind scoops on the south elevation also act as a passive thermal device. These scoops trap cooling winds during summer whilst providing shading from the hot afternoon sun.
