The New Museum’s inaugural exhibition, “Unmonumental: the Object in the 21st Century,” at its (relatively) new SAANA-designed building in the Bowery also had an online venue titled “Montage: Unmonumental Online”, hosted by Rhizome, an online institution that has been affiliated to the New Museum since 2003. Although the physical exhibition at the New Museum is over, the online section of the exhibition is still available, showcasing online projects by 14 different artists.

The making of:

New York-based, Swiss-born artist Olaf Breuning has one of the quirkiest websites I have seen in a while. His work is excellent, too, he was recently included in the 2008 Whitney Biennial. I especially enjoy his Chinatown sculptures, made with a variety of objects found in one of New York’s most notorious neighborhoods.

A young man in Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico has started a line of t-shirts titled “Puro Sinaloa Compa” with phrases common to drug dealing, an activity associated with this area. Some of the t-shirts read: “Hide the gun, there’s a road block”, “Outta my way”, “Your choice: silver or lead” and “Careful with the monsters.” Clever phrases many times with hidden meanings.

Fine artist Kittiwat Unarrom, son of a baker, shows such influence with Body Bakery offering body parts made entirely out of bread but that resemble dismembered bodies. If you overcome nausea, you’ll be impressed by the sculptural skills of the artist since these really really look like dead bodies. The footage shows the bakery at a gallery and includes a brief introduction of how the artist works. Provecho.
